I invite you to Join me on a tour which affords a unique opportunity to experience the spirit of India’s North West. We will travel through the spectacular northern plains, see the fantastic Taj Mahal, the Golden Temple at Amritsar, enter the hustle and bustle of the city of Delhi, visit famous religious and historical sites and meet interesting and challenging situations en route. We end our tour in the home town of the Dali Lama nestling in the foot hills of the Himalayas and experience its beauty and calm.

London – Delhi – Mathura – Agra – Amritsar – Dharamshala – Delhi – London

Itinerary:
DAY 1: FRIDAY 1ST MARCH 2019 – FLY TO DELHI

Overnight direct flight from London to Delhi with either British Airways or Jet Airways.

DAY 2: SATURDAY 2ND MARCH 2019 – DELHI

Arrive at Delhi at either 08:50 or 10:50 (depending on the airline) and transfer to hotel Ahuja Residency. After freshening up we will head out for an afternoon visit to nearby magnificent Humayun’s Tomb & the Sufi shrine at Nizamuddin Dargah.

DAY 3: SUNDAY 3RD MARCH 2019 – DELHI

This morning we will explore Old Delhi with a rickshaw ride and a visit to Jama Masjid, Asia’s largest mosque. After lunch we will drive to south Delhi to explore the magnificent Qutub Minar and adjacent Mehrauli Archaeological Park, and the Baha’i House of Worship, the Lotus Temple.

DAY 4: MONDAY 4TH MARCH 2019 – DELHI TO VRINADAVAN

Early morning start to drive 3km to Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station and board the “Samta Express”, train number 12808, departing Delhi at 08:35 and arriving at Mathura Junction at 10:18 (1 hour 45 mins journey time). Travel will be in 2AC (air-conditioned) class.

From the railway station at Mathura we will drive a short distance to the Hotel Spiti. Although an important pilgrimage centre for Hindus, Mathura is away from the mainstream tourist trail and staying here adds a unique religious and spiritual dimension to your holiday which many visitors don’t get to experience. We visit the busy temple of the birthplace of Lord Krishna.

DAY 5: TUESDAY 5TH MARCH 2019 – VRINDAVAN TO AGRA

This morning we will drive about 1 hour to Agra to see the amazing Taj Mahal, the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the finest sights in the world. Our local guide will give history and stories about this remarkable building – a marble mausoleum which has practically become a pilgrimage site for visitors to India. Also visit the Agra Fort and the tomb of I’timād-ud-Daulah, the “Baby Taj”.

DAY 6: WEDNESDAY 6TH MARCH 2019 – AGRA

This morning we rise early for a sunrise visit to the Taj Mahal. Later we will have a drink at Sheroes Hangout, a cafe run by acid attack survivors. After lunch we drive 45 minutes to the deserted city of Fatehpur Sikri, where the great Mogul Emperor Akbar held debates between Catholic, Hindu, Buddhist and Muslim scholars.

DAY 7: THURSDAY 7TH MARCH 2019 – AGRA TO DELHI

Today we will make our way back to Delhi, our stopover en route to Amritsar. Our train is in the evening, so take it easy in the hotel grounds for the day.
Afternoon transfer to Agra Cantt to board the “Gatimaan Express”, train number 12049, departing Agra at 17:50 and arriving at Hazrat Nizamuddin (south Delhi) at 19:30. The 1h 40m journey will be in air-conditioned Executive Chair Car Class.

DAY 8: FRIDAY 8TH MARCH 2019 – AMRITSAR

Transfer to Delhi airport to board Jet Airways flight 9W-824 from Delhi (12:35) to Amritsar (13:55). After checking in to the Hotel City Park Amritsar we will visit the Partition Museum and drive out to see the border closing ceremony at Wagah. Finally we will visit the Golden Temple for the Sukhasan ceremony where the holy book is put away for the night.

DAY 9: SATURDAY 9TH MARCH 2019 – AMRITSAR

We spend much of the day in the Golden Temple, taking in the peace and sanctuary in the place, and helping to prepare free meals for the pilgrims. We will also visit the nearby Jallianwala Bagh site of the massacre by the British in 1919.

In the evening we will sample some of Amritsar’s food delights.

DAY 10: SUNDAY 10TH MARCH 2019 – AMRITSAR TO DHARAMSALA

Today is a beautiful drive, firstly through the agricultural heartland of the Punjab, and then climbing up into the foothills of the Himalayas. Our destination is Dharamsala, home of the exiled Dali Lama and a large community of Tibetan refugees. The 200km will take around 5 hours.

DAY 11: MONDAY 11TH MARCH 2019 – DHARAMSALA

After a morning pilgrimage walk around the Dali Lama’s residence, a practice sacred to Tibetan Buddhists, we have a Tibetan cooking class, and spend the afternoon wandering down the narrow streets with their shops and outside stalls.

DAY 12: TUESDAY 12TH MARCH 2019 – DHARAMSALA

Today we visit the Dali Lamas Monastery and Temple, The Tibetan Museum and have a talk on Buddhism at the library. Later on we will drive out to the Norbulingka Institute, a centre dedicated to the preservation of traditional Tibetan arts and culture.

DAY 13: WEDNESDAY 13TH MARCH 2019 – DHARAMSALA

Day at leisure or a challenging walk up the trial to the Magic View Cafe, a total walk of about 5 hours there and back.

DAY 14: THURSDAY 14TH MARCH 2019 – DHARAMSALA TO DELHI

Morning transfer to Dharamsala airport to board Air India flight to Delhi.

On arrival we will transfer to the Ibis New Delhi Aerocity, a hotel convenient for the next day’s international departure. In the evening we can drive to an old part of Delhi, Mehrauli, for a final meal together.

DAY 15: FRIDAY 15TH MARCH 2019 – RETURN INTERNATIONAL DEPARTURE.

Transfer to Delhi airport for return flight with either British Airways or Jet Airways (arriving in Heathrow the same evening, UK time)

  • 2 x Internal flights as per itinerary: from Delhi to Amritsar and from Dharamsala to Delhi in Economy Class
